Giving a New Pet as a Gift This Holiday?

Pets can be a one-of-a-kind, never-forget-it gift but there are a few things to keep in mind when a new friend is at the top of someone special’s wish list. Here are some steps you can take to be sure the critter is taken care of even after the holiday excitement begins to fade.

  1. First, be sure that the critter you’re thinking about giving is actually what the recipient wants – if a bunny rabbit is the object of their hearts desire, a hamster might not be an acceptable substitute. Not all geckos are created equally! Gift Certificates make a great alternative – they assure that no one is disappointed and makes it that much more special because they get to pick out exactly which one catches their eye.
  2. If the recipient is a child make sure to clear the gift with their parents or guardians first – many pets end up back at the pet store or worse, in shelters and rescues, after the holidays because they were given as gifts but the family was unable to care for them.
  3. Be sure you know what the critter’s care requirements will be in order to keep them happy and healthy for at least 6 months to a year. Sure that turtle will be fine in a 10 gallon fish tank for a few days, but he’s going to grow – will the family have the means to upgrade when he needs it? Will they have the space for a larger home?
  4. Some animals, like many reptiles and fish, have very specific care requirements like diet and lighting. It’s important to think about all the things they will need to be healthy. If it’s not in your budget to provide all the necessities, consider making it a group-gift. Every one can pitch in and get a few items without feeling the burden of the whole set up. We offer complementary Gift Coordination and can help make this part of the process go seamlessly.
  5. Consider bringing your new friend home AFTER the holidays. Christmas is often pretty hectic for families and can be very stressful for a new pet too. We’re happy to hold your critter until the week after Christmas to help ease the transition. Cages and accessories can be wrapped up for the holidays then once the habitat is all set up and ready you can bring your new friend home.

At The WildSide, our caring and knowledgeable staff is waiting to help you make sure this holiday is one that will always be remembered. Unlike the box stores, we’re able to work directly with you to help you find exactly the right critter to fit into your family. We’ll take the time to answer all your questions and have the best selection of critters to choose from.
